Adding a time limit to the recordings made with Panopto Desktop recorder on Windows devices

By default, the Panopto Desktop recorder has no time limit restrictions and it is possible for recordings of multiple hours to be made if the video creator does not formally ‘Stop’ the recording. A three-hour recording time limit is in process of being applied to the Panopto Desktop recorder application that is accessed on-campus and on UoL-provided laptops.

This guide details how to apply a time limit to the recordings made with Panopto Desktop recorder on Windows devices that you have purchased (non UoL-provided).

Do note that at the current moment that the following versions of Panopto cannot have recording time restrictions applied:

  • The Panopto Recorder on Mac
  • The browser version of Panopto, called ‘Panopto Capture’00
  • The mobile app versions of the Panopto Recorder (Android, iOS)

To apply a recording time limit restriction to the Panopto Desktop recorder application on a Windows devices that you have purchased, please follow the below steps.

  1. Ensure Panopto for Windows is not running
  2. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the installation directory of Panopto for Windows.
  3. Copy and paste the file named “recorder.exe.config”. This should create a file named “recorder.exe -Copy.config”
  4. Open Notepad on the computer that the change is to be completed on as an administrator
  5. In Notepad, select File > Open
  6. Navigate to the installation directory for Panopto for Windows
  7. Click on the box indicating “Text Documents (*txt)” and change this to “All Files (*.*)
  8. Locate the file called “recorder.exe.config”, click on it, and select Open
  9. In the resulting file, press Control-F
  10. In the search box provided, enter “MaxRecordingLength” and click “Find Next” (this will highlight this text within the file).
  11. In the section underneath the highlighted text, change the “12” to the desired value for max duration, which is “03”.
  12. Click File > Save

If any issues are encountered with the change, you can revert to the default configuration quickly by:

  1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the installation directory of Panopto for Windows.
  2. Renaming the file recorder.exe.config to a new name 3. Renaming the file that was made in step 2 above to recorder.exe.config
