ARC (Assessment Related to Careers) Test

Pilot Workshop

Assessment Related to Careers (ARC) workshops, facilitated by the Digital Education Team, are an effective and collaborative method to design assessment points which support the development of  skills in relation to employment and careers. It is designed to support the development of 21st Century workplace skills and works in conjunction with the University of Lincoln Assessment Framework and the Lincoln Award. This workshop is designed to work in conjunction with our ABC curriculum Design workshop.

This workshop is based around  P21’s framework for ‘21st Century Learning’. This framework specifies embedding 21st Century Skills into the curriculum to help students prepare for future careers.  The ARC workshop combines technology, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills together to create assessment to develop students with skills they will need for their career.

If you would like to download the tool or find out how we can run supported workshops with you and your team, please find information at the bottom of the page.

Benefits

ARC workshops can be useful for both Programme level and Module level assessment designs to ensure that the course includes all the necessary components and work well as a cohesive hole. Some of the benefits for assessment design are:

Programme Design

  • Enables you to see an overview of all of the assessments for all of your programme.
  • Supports good assessment design based around key strategies, policies and guidance at the University of Lincoln.
  • Ensures a wide range of assessment types and opportunities.
  • Highlights key assessment practices, including an in-depth overview of how formative assessment feed into summative approaches.
  • Transparently shows which key (and transferable) skills will be met in each module and the development over each cohort and level.
  • Enables you to build a wider picture of the skills graduates will have had the oportunity to study over their course.
  • Can give links to outcomes, professional body requirements and apprenticeship standards.

Module Design

  • Supports you with building good assessment design based around key strategies, policies and guidance at the University of Lincoln.
  • Gives the opportunity to look at a wide range of assessment types
  • Supports an in-depth overview of how formative assessment feed into summative approaches.
  • Once designed, can be fed into the ABC workshop to ensure consistency
  • Transparently shows which key (and transferable) skills will be met in each module
  • Can give links to outcomes, professional body requirements and apprenticeship standards.

How does it work?

Whilst this workshop is designed to be an effective and engaging hands-on workshop that works in conjunction with our current ABC workshop, it can be used independently to help review and reshape assessments. The workshops takes roughly 50 minutes using an online format, teams are able to work together to create an assessment which highlights and supports the development of employability skills through the use of authentic assessment design.

The ARC workshop progresses through three key phases: Initiation, Innovation and Implementation. The three phases help you identify:

  • What the assessment is,
  • How it will work,
  • What skills will be embedded,
  • How this will relate to the rest of your module.

The ARC information is then added to the curriculum map outlining the type and sequence of learning activities (created during the ABC workshop). ARC is particularly useful for new programmes or those approaching validation but can be used to review your current offering.

Downloading the tool & Organising workshops

We have two different versions of the ABC & ARC workshops available to support you with curriculum development and design. This falls into the categories of supported and independent workshops. Please find more information about what each of these workshops entailed below.

If you would like support with ideas, embedding digital pedagogy or working with a programme team to develop several modules, we can offer you and your team a consulutation session and workshop. Our team will work in conjunction with you and your module/programme team to highlight what support and guidance you may required. We will then customise and help you set up workshops with your team.

If you would like to access this level of support, then please contact our team to arrange an ARC consultation meeting.

The ARC curriculum mapping tool can be used independently by you and your team to enable curriculum design. The ARC tool uses excel and has supporting videos as well as help and support guides built into the tool. These resources will help you redesign, reshape and review your current curriculum offering.

Please note: The Office for Quality and Student Partnerships (OQSP) will accept the ARC map as supporting evidence for module applications.

Accessing the tool

If you would like to access the tool to use independently or with your module team, it can be accessed via the link below. You will be invited to complete a small survey, then at the end of the survey you will be given a link to download the tool.
